Antique folk art chair from Sweden made around 1860 in painted pine. The chair has the original paint with a time-worn distressed patina. The chair had a very particular function in Northern Sweden. We usually experience very cold winters so during the colder months people would store straw underneath the seat of the chair which was then used as isolation inside their shoes. A clever solution that we can now see the traces of. Today we luckily have shoes with thick heat insulating soles instead. The hinges to the lid on the seat were replaced during the early 1900s. There are traces of an old repair at the top of the backrest, see picture. Height to the seat is 43.5 cm.
